My path was built on vocational raw experience. Academic firepower arrived later: a PhD in Forensic Psychology, a Masters' in fraud and corruption studies, postgraduate teaching and professional accreditations.
My career began in the 1980s UK legal system, navigating a turbulent era of reform. As a police officer, I conducted a range of criminal investigations. Through that vast frontline exposure, I saw firsthand what happens when others cross the line: officers lying under oath, manipulating suspects to force confessions, altering witness evidence, and routinely violating discovery rules. I also encountered narcissistic prosecutors who fueled the regime by instructing officers to "make the facts fit" - which included telling us to get witnesses to "tweak" their evidence, and in some cases, "drop in" words of criminal definitions to nail the case. Just to feed some egos whilst putting victims of crime at serious legal risk.
Decades later, the systemic flaws haven't changed, but my mission has.
After leaving the police, I worked as a police station adviser for law firms, handling prison visits and legal defense client support. I represented clients in police interrogations day and night. And supporting defence counsel with added analytical verve, I became deeply immersed in the everyday stressful realities of heavy caseloads, hectic law offices, and difficult clients - with an added unhealthy dimension of some police officers accusing me of "going to the dark side," matched by equal befuddlement of some lawyers who suspected I was a "police spy." But this friction merely sparked my ambition to progress and achieve.
Along that timeline, I also witnessed the dark surge of establishment "spin coaching" - professionals paying for expensive coaching under the delusion that deflection, verbal anomalies, and half-truths aren't "real lying."
Five books, over 1,000 hours of global training, and a touch of Scottish grit built Tartan Forensic. This mission took me across four continents, collaborating with top minds in forensic psychology and law. That international journey provided the ultimate professional development - immersing me in how criminality interfaces with distinct cultural influences and nuances across diverse global environments, a critical edge in this line of work - to turn decades of field experience into relentless, precise defense training.
